So they rented out the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles, California, and E3 was born. But in 1995, the Interactive Digital Software Association, the company who established the Entertainment Software Rating Board a year prior, decided it was time for the games industry to have its own massive showcase. Prior to the introduction of E3, the games industry used the Consumer Electronic Show as a venue for presenting upcoming products and titles. This changed in 2016 when the ESA introduced a public area at LA Live next door, then introduced public exhibition passes in 2017. 
E3 is a trade show, meaning that it is not open to the general public.
It has undergone many changes in recent years, but continues to be a meeting place for the industry's publishers, developers, retailers, and press. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is considered the most important event in the gaming industry each year.
